I believe the difference between negotiation tactics we see is notable. With Russia:

In dealing with Canada, Denmark, Panama or Mexico, Trump makes outrageous demands and uses maximum pressure to push through concessions. And with Russia Trump first removes demands there are somewhat reasonable (restoration of borders that Russia agreed to by multiple treaties since 1990) before starting negotiations.

Look, I want peace in Ukraine, and obviously Ukraine will have to make concessions.

But Trump is handling this poorly.

Even if NATO membership is off the table, why come out and say it before negotiations? Why not have that as a negotiation chip?

I guess you can argue that is something to bring Russia to the table, but the US is really losing leverage in these talks by this kind of rhetoric.

And cutting Ukraine and the EU out of these talks is not constructive from our alliance perspective. The US is really embracing this isolationist approach, and it's reckless and foolhardy.

So if the US can somehow get a decent peace treaty with terms that are acceptable to Ukraine, then I am all for praising this.

But the way this is being handled gives me serious worries.

I live in a red state. I vote for Donald Trump and against him twice now. I was almost soley voting for Harris based  only to keep the status quo for the support for Ukraine. I would have never imaged it to be this bad for Ukraine. But I see both sides….there was a lot of wasted tax payers dollars, and we are only scratching the surface with the democrat corruption which also makes me sick I voted for Harris…irony to save Ukraine and to obliterate my economy. Maybe it would have been better to cut the waste from the USAID and see how much money is going to be saved, instead Donald Trump just sees all of this outgoing money as waste and so does many of his fan base and even some democrats disagree with the war three years later. It’s become a war of attrition at the US taxpayers dime. I’m sure Trump was well informed that Zelenskyy peace offer was impossible under Ukraines conditions. Why not just see what the Russians  offer is. What I hope is that Russia has to pay up for the destruction and that the tariffs don’t go away until it’s 100% paid. There’s nothing reasonable about Eastern Ukraine, Crimea or NATO membership for Ukraine. Hell, Crimea and Donbas are ethnic Russians, who speak Russian exclusively. There is no movement on these facts and are non-starters for Putin. The time to have prevented Russia annexation of these regions has long passed. 

At this point, the issue is an open chest wound for NATO nations and it’s time they recognize it - Putin certainly does.

I really hate clickbait trash attention grabbing titles like this, but the article isn't wrong. Ukraine is never going to get "1,000 Abrams" or some ludicrous amount of air power required to gain real air superiority. European troops aren't going to enter Ukraine and start shooting Russians, no matter how much they say they "might consider it" (they won't). Ukraine's Western allies were never going to give Ukraine what it needed to win, merely enough to survive. Certainly not with Trump in the US, and with unwilling Europeans who are still doing the absolute bare minimum in terms of re-armament and defense promises.

Russian forces have exhausted an insane amount of troops and material, but they have more and the industry to produce more. Will the Russian populace and economy suffer? Yes, but not fast enough to help Ukraine retake the occupied territory. There is no realistic scenario where Ukraine sends troops into Crimea, Donetsk, or so on. There are plenty of scenarios where Ukraine loses more ground.

The fact that after 3 years fighting a land war against the world's second largest military Ukraine is not only still in  the fight, but also lost a mere 20% of its territory is astounding. But what is Ukraine supposed to do now? Grind on for 2-3 more years, draft and depopulate its 18+ age demographic, and keep withstanding missiles that devastate the country further? Continuing the war will at best lead to more destruction, at worst lead to more Russian gains.

Freezing the war frontlines won't necessarily lead to a divided Ukraine forever. Nations have reunited multiple times throughout history. Russia will have to deal with a suspiciously well armed insurgency in Eastern Ukraine for many years (which is incredibly ironic). Russia's frozen state assets will go to rebuilding a smaller, but unified and Democratic Ukraine. Ukraine now has many strong Western partners and has finally broken away from Russia for good. Yes they might not get the Disney movie picture perfect outcome, but there was never a realistic scenario where they were.

I disagree. The first rule for any sane person is that you don’t negotiate with unreliable, dishonest people unless you have the power to enforce the terms. Ukraine can’t enforce the terms against Russia or the USA. 

So there is literally no benefit at all, not even the perceived benefit of the fighting stopping, because as soon as it benefits Russia, it’ll start again. They may as well keep going and hope Russia collapses first. It just might, too. We can’t see exactly what’s going on inside, but the eagerness in Russia for this peace deal is all the reason for Ukraine to not accept it.

They could try and buy what they cannot produce, such as Patriot surface-to-air missiles, but in this case they would find themselves in a queue behind other customers who are higher on Washington’s priority list, such as Israel. Ukraine needs them now.

A British officer working with the Ukrainians was downbeat. “We’re not talking about a Ukrainian collapse,” he said. “But we are likely to see Russia able to make faster, cheaper gains.” In other words, if Ukraine fights on , there is every reason to believe that at some point in the future its leaders will eventually find themselves forced to swallow even harsher terms.

He actually says "This deal does not include constraints on Ukraine’s capacity to defend itself", *after* he has acknowledged that it would bar NATO membership for Ukraine and that Russia is demanding limitations on the Ukrainian armed forces.

He further says "There are no restrictions on other military alliances or even the presence of foreign troops on its soil", and so makes convenient and self serving assumptions about a deal that has not even been negotiated yet.

He continues, apparently in all seriousness, with...

He acknowledges Ukraine won't get any security guarantees in exchange for agreeing to a deal, while adding hopefully that "that does not preclude them from being provided separately" - though he is ominously mum on the key question of who is going to provide them.

Finally, he suggests Vladimir Putin is actually going to be ok with the seizure of Russian assets as reparations, a neat bit of wishful thinking that is he is likely to be brutally disbursened of the moment real negotiations actually begin.

In short, if you look at a potential peace deal from just the right angle, and squint hard enough, and tell yourself enough lies, and indulge in enough self serving assumptions about what terms the deal will actually include, you could almost just about convince yourself this is something less than a complete sellout of the West's principles and Ukraine's interests.

Really, it's only partly about the funding and the weapons. They are basically out of human capital.... i.e. cannon fodder. Ukraine will likely never recover from this. You just can not remove a significant percentage of the male population between 18 and 50 and re-populate.

They will require cultural enrichment, which I am sure the EU leadership can provide. In exchange for certain 'commodities' of course.

I agree with this article Ukraine simply cannot sustain the war for much longer.
Even if it receives European armaments instead of American, and somehow manages to source shells, for example, buying them from America, what also may be not the option, it still doesn’t have enough people to continue fighting. There are almost no men left who are willing to fight. Mobilization is already extremely difficult, even though it is often forced: people are simply grabbed off the streets and taken to recruitment centers, where health checks are conducted, but most pass them anyway, even with poor health. As a result, some people barely leave their apartments, sending their wives to work instead. Others take the risk and might just track the locations of recruitment patrols through special channels. Some have disability certificates, though these are not always genuine. And it is only few methods. So there are many official and unofficial ways to evade mobilization. Even those who still live in Ukraine are very difficult to send to the front, and even if they are sent, they have no real motivation, which is a very important factor. Recently, there was a program offering major benefits for young people who sign military contracts, but only about 500 people agreed. Lowering the conscription age to 18, as some Redditors here suggest, would hardly solve the problem: there are few willing young people too, so the with them are the same problems and the number of people in that age group is relatively small anyway. Now compare that to russia’s situation: they still have a large population to draw from, and it remains relatively easy to mobilize people, plus there is the potential reserve from North Korea. Ukraine simply has no better alternatives.
If it refuses to agree to this treaty, the next deal will be made from an even weaker position, or Ukraine might cease to exist altogether.

The way Trump sees the situation is very simple. He sees that Ukraine is facing an invasive force it cannot stop alone, and it cannot win without EU and US increasing their levels of support. This leads to him pressuring Ukraine to take a ”deal” and accept loss.

Those are actually facts. However, Trump doesn’t seem to consider any moral underpinnings or what this kind of ”peace” would mean for the future of Ukraine or the future of Europe.

The way I interpret this deal:  

It is basically a promise to Putin that he has 3 years to take a breather, and build up his military and economy back to full strength.

Then they can invade again, using full force, in 2028 - when the US is deep into the election cycle, and no candidate will want to be "pro-war" by helping Ukraine.

From a realistic point of view, I really don't see how this could be done any other method, unless anyone can suggest credible alternatives?

Getting to the point, Ukraine *cannot* retake it's occupied land, no matter how much aid is given, outside of having NATO forces directly intervening (which won't happen). 

Russia likewise won't roll over and withdraw from Ukraine, as it has no incentives to do so, seeing as Ukraine themselves cannot expel them via military force, but continuing the war would certainly hurt them just as much as Ukraine, and Ukraine has the bonus of striking very costly facilities etc inside Russia.

Crimea at this point is almost certainly Russian in everything but name, whatever few remaining pro-Ukrainian populace were present have most likely being shipped off &amp; replaced as expected by Russia. The Donbas was already against Ukraine for the most part, even before Russia's involvement - so neither of these territories will be returned.

Europe doesn't have the willpower or the means to credibly pressure Russia, only China &amp; the U.S can do that, so at the moment it's relegated to the sidelines with loud proposals/statements such as not recognising Crimea etc.

I really don't know how or what could be done for a peace deal at this point, as both sides are sticking to aims which aren't achievable or realistic.

Of course, it’s not a very good deal for Ukraine, but you probably can’t offer Putin fewer privileges. He understands that Ukraine is struggling with conscription issues, a shortage of shells, and a lack of funding from the U.S. He’s been fighting for three years without significant territorial gains, and now, just as the Ukrainian front may collapse and he could seize large new areas, he’s told to stop.

I keep asking and I can't get an answer. It's going to take boots on the ground to evict Russian soldiers. Ukraine doesn't have enough so who's going to send some? Trumps been clear he wants us out of wars so it's not gonna be us. Most of Europe is fine sending money but lack the will to send in troops.. So then what? It's a stalemate. Honestly if China was fine with not supplying Russia I would say this deal is insane, but there are some concessions Russia has made in this deal. Shows progress, but still not  worth accepting. Trump is going to have to go back to he drawing board. Russia still doesn't seem to understand that aggression will not be rewarded. Most they will get is recognition of their past 2016 gains  if anything. Ukraine will not lose their nation to stop the war when they didn't incite it.

Everyone needs to accept the reality that currently occupied territory will be lost. Do you see any European army mobilizing to invade and evict them?

"Land for peace" has formed the basis of virtually every treaty in the history of the world. Anyone with even a casual interest in world affairs would seek precedent in similar deals.

The real question is, "What price would Russia least want to pay?"

Surely it would be a price that requires surrendering land of her own. Which raises the question, "What land?"

The most clever deal would be one which uses Russia's own logic against her. Specifically, Putin has communicated his belief that Russia should not lose historical territory that was largely severed as a result of WW2/end of Soviet Union.

Use that exact same reasoning to make the following maximum request:

The odds of a WW3 are growing day by day. Russia will not lose the war as they cannot afford to do so. It will mean their end as a culture and as a country and nobody will let that happen. Ukraine will be supported by Europe by all means in order to retain its territories. US right now are trying to take Russia as an ally due to the fact that China will most probably become the 1st economy worldwide by 2030 and it will also mean the downfall of USA which they will try to avoid no matter what. And how can you take Russia as an ally? By offering them what they want, Ukraine and most probably more European countries that were part of them sometime in their long history. US needs to destroy Europe in order to remain the 1st economy in the world.
